Theodore by Ann Thompson

Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.
                --Theodore Roosevelt

I made this scarf for my husband (whose favorite president is T.R.) after the yarn had been sitting in stash for more than a year. I wanted to design something simple and classic. The pattern may appear understated, but the stitch definition is surprisingly squishy, and the alpaca gives it a deceptive warmth and softness for harsh winters. As luck would have it, D.C. experienced one of the mildest winters yet…but he’ll be ready for next year.

One size, measures 10” x 66” after blocking.

Joseph Galler Superfine Prime Alpaca (100% alpaca; 665 yards[608 m] / 8 oz): Natural, 2 hanks. Yarn is held doubled throughout pattern.

US #5 (3.75 mm): 9” straight (minimum) or 24” (minimum) circular

28 sts and 16 rows = 4” (10 cm) in patt st after blocking.
22 sts and 24 rows = 4” (10 cm) in st st after blocking.

Stitch markers (optional)

Please see our standard list of abbreviations.

RT (right-leaning twist): K2tog but leave on needle, then k first stitch again and slip both stitches off needle.

LT (left-leaning twist)

Pattern Notes

You may find it helpful to place markers on either side of the separator stitches between pattern blocks to help keep track of the pattern.
