Glass Slippers by Cailyn Meyer

Without her lost glass slipper, the Prince would never have found Cinderella. These socks have the delicate braiding and detailed toe that I remember from a favorite story book illustration of Cinderella’s story.  They are perfect for the ball and while they won’t fall off your feet, you could leave one strategically laying around for your Prince to find!  The shine of bamboo in the yarn gives a nice depth to the twisted stitches that travel down the leg, split at the heel, and meet on top of the foot.  You can work the twists with a cable needle, but give the techniques explained here a try on your swatch.  It may take a bit of practice, but it’s faster once you get the hang of it.

Pattern Notes

Although the pattern doesn’t call for any stitch markers except one to mark the beginning of the rnd, it can be helpful to place markers at the first and last stitch of the cable charts.

Leg

CO 68 (76) sts.  Divide stitches evenly between 4 needles, and join in the rnd, being careful not to twist.
Work 1”  of 1x1 Twisted Rib.
Set Up Rnd: K1, [p1, LT, k1tbl] 3 times, p2, work Moss Stitch over the next 20(24) stitches, [p1, LT, k1tbl,*] 3 times, p2, knit to the end of the round.
Rnd 1: K1, work Row 1 of Leg Chart, work Moss Stitch over next 20(24) sts, work Row 1 of Leg Chart, knit to the end of the rnd.
Rnd 2: K1, work next rnd of Leg Chart, work Moss Stitch over next 20(24) sts, work next row of Leg Chart, knit to the end of the rnd.
Repeat Rnd 2 as est until leg is desired length, or approx 5”, ending with Rnd 4 of Leg Chart.

Heel

Set Up Row (RS): Knit the first 8 sts of Needle 1 onto Needle 4, turn.
Set Up Row 2 (WS): Sl 1, p33 (37).  Note: You will work 7 sts from needle 3 to get the full 34 (38) sts.  The heel flap is worked back and forth on these 34 (38) sts.  Place other sts on scrap yarn or stitch holder.
Row 1 (RS): *Sl 1, k1* across.
Row 2 (WS): Sl 1, purl across.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 an additional 9 times, ending on a WS row.  I think this should be 9 times, as in the heel flap will be 20 rows long – is that correct?

Heel Turn

Row 1 (RS): Sl 1, k18 (20), ssk, k1; 1 st decd
Row 2 (WS): Sl 1, p5, p2tog, p1.
Row 3: Sl 1, k6, ssk, k1.
Row 4: Sl 1, p7, p2tog, p1.
Continue this way, working 1 stitch more each row, until all sts have been worked, ending on a WS row.  18 (22) sts rem.

Gusset

Sl 1, knit across heel stitches, using the same needle (now Needle 1) pick up and knit 20 sts along the heel flap.  With an empty needle (Needle 2), pick up and purl 1 stitch in the gap between the heel and the instep (counts as first st in Chart A), work Rnd 1 of Chart A, work Moss Stitch over 10 (12) sts.  With an empty needle (Needle 3), work Moss Stitch over 10(12) sts, work Rnd 1 of Chart B, pick up and purl 1 stitch in the gap between instep and heel (counts as last stitch in Chart B).  Using an empty needle (Needle 4,) pick up and knit 20 sts along the heel flap, k9(11) (center of heel.)  Mark this as the beginning of the rnd.  Needles 2 and 3 form the instep, Needles 1 and 4 are the sole.  94(102) sts.

Rnd 1: Knit to 3 sts before the end of Needle 1, k2tog, k1, work next rnd of Chart A, work Moss Stitch over the next  20 (24) sts, work next rnd of Chart B, k1, ssk, knit to the end of the rnd. 2 sts decdd.
Rnd 2: Knit Needle 1, work next rnd of Chart A, work Moss Stitch over the next  20(24) sts, work next rnd of Chart B, knit to the end of the rnd.
Repeat Rnds 1 and 2 until 70 (78) sts rem; 36 (40) instep sts and 34 (38) sole sts.
Work Rod 2 until foot measures between 4.5”-5” shorter than desired length, ending with Rnd 1 of Charts A and B.

Foot

Rnd 1: Knit to Chart A, M1L, work next rnd of Chart A, ssk, work Moss Stitch until 2 sts before Chart B, p2tog, work next rnd of Chart B, M1R, knit to the end of the rnd.
Rnd 2: Knit to Chart A, work next row of Chart A, p1, work Moss Stitch until 1 st before Chart B, k1, work Chart B, knit to the end of the rnd.
Repeat Rnds 1 and 2 until 4 sts remain between Charts A and B, ending with Rnd 2 (Rnd 1 of Charts A and B.)
Next Rnd: Knit to Chart A, work Rnd 2 of Chart A, ssk, k2tog, work Rnd 2 of Chart B, knit to the end of the rnd.  2 sts decd; 68(76) sts
Next Rnd: Knit to Chart A, work Rnd 3 of Chart A, p2, work Rnd 3 of Chart B, knit to end of rnd.

Replace Charts A and B with Foot Chart, knitting all sts not shown on chart, as follows: Knit to Chart A, work Foot Chart, knit to end of rnd.
Cont as est, working entire foot chart.
If needed, knit until foot measures 2” shorter than desired length.

Toe

Arrange sts to have 34(38) sts on the instep (Needles 2 and 3) and 34(38) sts on the sole (Needes 1 and 4.)
Decrease Rnd: Knit to 3 sts before the end of Needle 1, k2tog, k2, ssk, knit to 3 sts before the end of Needle 3, k2tog, k2, ssk, knit to end of rnd.
Knit 3 rnds.
Work Decrease Rnd once.
Knit 2 rnds.
Repeat last 3 rnds once more.
Work Decrease Rnd once.
Knit 1 rnd.
Repeat last 2 rnds twice more.
Work Decrease Rnd every rnd, until 8 sts rem.

Finishing

Cut yarn and thread through remaining sts.  Pull tight and weave in all ends.
