Socks are worked top down, from cuff to toe. Recommended method is to use one large circular needle; knitter is free to use double pointed needles if preferred, but should be aware that the Twist motif will require transfer of stitches between needles once per pattern repeat.
When doing Twist chart, knit all Knit stitches through back loop for better visual effect.
CO 80 (88) stitches. If using DPNs, divide evenly between four needles Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist.
Ribbing: K1, *p2, k2, rep from * until 1 st rem, k1 (note – ribbing is done in this way to allow Twists to flow cleanly from the ribbing)
Repeat ribbing for 15 rnds, or until ribbing measures approx 1.5”.
Set-up Rnd: *P3, k2, p3, rep from * to end of row.
Work Twist pattern as per chart A until leg is approximately 6” from cast on row, ending with row 16.
Rnds 9 and 10 may be a bit confusing at first, because the twist motif in this pattern is continuous around the sock, so at this point, the first and last stitches of the row are twisted together, as follows:
Rnd 9: knit the first stitch of the rnd, then follow the chart as described. There is an extra ‘stitch’ at the end of Rnd 9 in the chart; this indicates that you twist the last stitch of the rnd with the first stitch of the next rnd.
Rnd 10: Because you twisted the first stitch with the last stitch, you do not knit the first stitch again (this is designated by the completely black square at the start of this row in the chart).
Note: The heel flap is worked flat, using 38 (42) sts.
Setup: P1 (3), and slip the newly worked st(s) to the previous needle. The heel flap is worked on the next 38 (42) sts.
Size Medium: Slip the 39th st to the next needle to allow you to work just the heel flap sts by themselves.
Size Large: You will need to slip one stitch from the other needle onto the active needle in order to have 42 active sts. You will have 46 sts on the other needle.
Row 1 (RS): *S1 wyb, k1, rep from * to end.
Row 2: S1 wyf, p to end
Repeat these two rows 18 (19) more times, or until heel flap reaches desired length (about 2”).
Row 1 (RS): Sl 1, K23 (25), ssk, k1, turn
Row 2: Sl 1, p9, p2tog, p1, turn
Row 3: Sl 1, k to st before gap made on previous row; ssk, k1, turn
Row 4: Sl 1, p to st before gap made on previous row; p2tog, p1, turn
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all heel sts have been worked; 24 (26) sts rem.
a) K12 (13), place marker (Marker #1), k12 (13)
b) Pick up 18(19) sts along left side of flap. Place marker (Marker #2).
b) P1 (3), knit Rnd 1 of Chart B, p1(3). Place marker (Marker #3)
c) Pick up 18 (19) sts along right side of heel flap
d) K to Marker #1 in middle of heel flap, which now indicates start of rnd.
a) K until 3 sts bef Marker #2, k2tog, k1.
b) P1 (3), work next rnd of Chart B, p1 (3)
c) K1, ssk, knit to Marker #1 in middle of heel
a) k to Marker #2
b) p1 (3), work next row of Chart B, p1 (3)
c) K to Marker #1 in middle of heel.
Repeat these two rnds until only 38 (42) sts remain on heel flap. Then repeat Rnd 2 until foot measures about 2” less than desired length.
a) K to Marker #2
b) P1 (3), p9, p3tog, p16, p3tog, p9, p1(3)
c) K to end of row
a) K to 3 sts before Marker #2 , k2tog, k1
b) K1, ssk, k to 3 sts before Marker #3, k2tog, k1
c) K1, ssk, k to end of rnd
Rnd 2: Knit all sts
Repeat these 2 rnds until only 16 sts remain.
Cut yarn, leaving long enough tail for grafting. Graft toe using Kitchner stitch.
Weave in ends.
